Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulveys is a British feminist film theorist, she is currently professor of film and media studies at Birkbeck, University of London.

A theory of hers which I have looked at that I think will effect the making of my music video is the male gaze.
Laura Mulvey believed that all media is produced from a heterosexual males point of view, she believes women are objectified. She believes a lot of text is filmed from what a male wants to see, for example women being provocative.
She also believes that if media was not created in this way no-one would want to watch it, not even females.
Nearly all types of media text apply to this theory. Here I will analyze a music video which shows Laura Mulveys Theory.
I am going to be applying Mulvey's theory to the music video;

As you can see in this video women are shown using provocative and suggestive movements.
Also, the dancers costumes are very revealing and again, this is suggestive to an audience.
It's easy to see that in this music video it is meant that attract audiences (predominantly male) through the choreography and costume.

The reason for looking at Laura Mulveys theory is because in my music video and for my album cover I believe I need to make them both interesting in order to approach a wide target market, I do agree with Laura Mulveys theory that the majority of media text is produced for what a heterosexual male would want to see, but I also believe that this is what makes the audience attracted to the text. Video and media text that sexualizes women is not seen so be unacceptable any more, people are happy to watch it and therefore creating text without thinking from a males perspective would mean less people are likely to be interested in it. This means that when im making my music video it would be acceptable for me to sexual the actor in a reasonable way. Although, I am not completly sure that it will fit the style of the artist.

Actor profiles

Actor Profiles

The reason I chose Nick to be in my film is because of his style. His dress sense fits the genre of my music video, he does Performance Studies so he won't be camera shy and because he is attractive.

The reason I chose Devon to be in my video is again because she fits the codes and convention of my genre, she does Performance Studies and she's very attractive.

I am going to be using myself in my music video. The reason for this being that as our location is in a particular place it will mean we would have to travel to get to it, this limits the amount of people which could be in the video. I also believe that this is a good idea considering I will have directed the script and therefore will know exactly how we want things to work.
Another reason I decided to be in my film is because I also do performance studies and therefore and used to performing to an audience.

Finally by having all of these factors it means that I, as the actress will be able to relate to the target audience I believe will be viewing my music video. In effect this will make the video more appeling to the target audience and look more professional if the right syle of actor is used in consideration with the style of music.
